My 'sappy' memories are, regrettably, tied mostly to instances of unrequited love:

'You Light Up My Life' (Debby Boone) - the first girl I consider having been 'in love' with.

'Babe' (Styx) - just as well I never ended up with this gal, whose life took a decidedly negative turn

'Ever Since The World Began' (Survivor) - not unrequited for the first year, in fact a rather torrid romance until I got dumped

'Cherish' (Kool & The Gang) - success at last, this was the first slow dance with the woman who would become my wife

Anyone over 35 from around Cincinnati may recall a station called WWEZ that played SERIOUSLY sappy instrumental elevator muzak 24/7; 'Summer Samba', 'Theme From A Summer Place', etc. My Dad had that on constantly so that was a large part of my musical world until I discovered my own sappiness....

If could reach my 45s -- not into contortionism tonight or ever.  But here's one for the night--"Yummy, Yummy".  For those who don't now it, "yummy, yummy, I got love in my tummy".  Outstanding songwriting???

Sappy bands for me would be either Air Supply and also America...When I hear those bands I want to cry.. also a cool story about me and when I noticed that I was in love with music and how my reaction at such a young age was to the song "thats What Friends R For" ... made me cry at the age of 6 or 7 when the song was released.. thats wh3n I knew music was my thing!!  d000d

Tyler, I used to play that on piano and sing along.  Means I must have that in a songbook around here somewhere.

"Cats in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin still brings a lump to my throat.  It was a radio hit around the same time my dad died when I was 12 years old.

Ironically, I heard the song on the radio the same day I found out I needed emergency OHS to repair my aortic valve.  Interesting how these moments in life all string together to form a common thread.

When I hear it now I smile because I have my own son and it's a nice reminder about what's really important in life!

"An Extraordinary Life" by Johan and "100 Years" by Five for Fighting are a couple more emotional favorites (although they are not sappy).

Sappy tune for me would have to be Mahler's 5th. Gets me every time.

Oh, Sir Wetton, I have to agree with you there, but I'd not call it sappy...it is beauty incarnate -- emotively transfomative -- sheer genius.  I could listen to the Adagietto for all eternity and celebrate the beauty of it every single second of forever. Is that a bit much?  I think not.

Here it is, "the most gorgeous 11:00 of music ever written" (I heard that from a classical radio announcer one day as an introduction, it's not my line) just close your eyes and listen....:

The first 7:50 of Adagietto movement from Mahler's 5th

(Youtube then self-cues to the last 4:04...)

Another favorite of mine is Debussy's Claire De Lune...ahhhhh:

Orchestra Version....

Well done, Amie. It is sooo beautiful it's beyond description. Apparently it was a birthday present for  Mrs.M, who then promptly left him.  Presumably, that was Gus at his most 'up'.

Oh, poor, dear Gussie-bear.  That's sooo sad.  How could she do that after hearing the Adagietto?  OMG!  Maybe they had a wicked fight about the movement that follows....and how it just seems to ruin the mood?  'Just a guess.

Btw, I'm just keeping that youtube clip on a loop on my laptop for the night....my gawd, I could just listen to this forever, as I said...

OK, OK, are your saying Gus was at his most "up" the day she left?  Hmmmm....
